General description
Adenosine deaminase, also known as ADA, or Cat eye syndrome critical region protein 1, and encoded by the gene CECR1/ADA2/ADGF/IDGFL, is an extracellular enzyme that works on adenosine and causes the degradation of adenosine to inosine and free NH3. Adenosine deaminase is an extracellular secreted enzyme that binds to cell surfaces via proteoglycans. The binding appears to mediate cellular proliferation and differentiation in many systems, though this activity is independent of its deaminase activity. Adenosine deaminase is highly present in blood plasma and widely expressed in adult and fetal tissues. While there many clinical deficiencies associated with adenosine deaminase (ADA) mutations, the level of ADA activity in the blood and fluids is used as a biomarker to help distinguish various diseases. For instance, the level of activity in lung fluid is correlated with tuberculosis infection and used to distinguish it from malignant pleural effusion (MPE). The ADA level in CSF in patients with meningitis also helps to identify tuberculosis as the cause as opposed to another agent or condition.
